Best Book Apps

What is the best book recap app in 2026?

It depends on how you read. If the book is a Kindle ebook and you are in the US, use Kindle's free Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book first. If you read in print, on audio, or outside Amazon and you have an iPhone, Magic Bookmark recaps to your exact page for supported titles, at $1.40 to $4.99 a book after a free first credit. A general chatbot is not a substitute, because it does not know your page.

Picked by the job, not forced into one ranking: which tool gets you back into the book you are reading without spoiling the rest.

Kindle app

78/100

The Kindle app's 78 is its score as a whole ebook app; it is on this page for three built-in features. Recaps gives "previously on" refreshers for earlier books in a series you have read. Story So Far recaps the current book up to where you stopped, for thousands of popular fiction titles. Ask this Book answers plot and character questions without spoilers, on the Kindle iOS app in the US for now. All of it is free with a Kindle ebook you bought or borrowed through Amazon, and none of it can see your paperback or your audiobook.

The catch: The least generous lock-in table on the site; day-one settings listed in the review.

Magic Bookmark

60/100

Photograph your page, type the page number, or type the last line you heard in an audiobook, and you get a recap, a cast list and a question box that stop exactly there, plus character chat that only knows the story up to your page. It works with the copy you already have in any format, which is the whole point. The limits are just as plain: supported titles only, iPhone only, and a credit per book on top of the book. Scored 60/100 as a desk review.

The catch: Supported titles only, iPhone only, and a credit per book on top of the book itself.

What we did not score, and why

Why not just ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude?

A general chatbot does not know which page you are on. You have to tell it, then trust it to stop there while it draws on everything written about the book, ending included. It can also mix up events or state details that are not in the book. That is how these tools work, not a test we ran, and it is why we do not score them as recap apps.

What about Goodreads, StoryGraph and other trackers?

Trackers log what you read and how far you got. None of the trackers we score publishes a plot recap locked to your page, so they sit beside a recap tool, not instead of one.

What about fan wikis and plot summaries?

They cover the whole book or the whole series, so the spoiler is one scroll away. Useful after you finish, risky while you are reading.

How we chose

Recap tools face the same eight-criteria rubric as every other app on this site. The Kindle app's score covers the whole ebook app, so this page picks by use case rather than by total: the right tool depends on the format of your book and the phone in your hand. Magic Bookmark is a desk review from its App Store listing and website, checked 2026-10-27; the Kindle features are described from Amazon's own announcement.

Questions readers actually ask

What app recaps a book up to my page?
Two that we cover: Kindle's Story So Far, inside Kindle ebooks on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app in the US, and Magic Bookmark, for print, audiobook or any ebook copy of a supported title on iPhone.
Is there a Story So Far for paperbacks?
Not from Amazon: Story So Far works inside Kindle ebooks. For a supported title in print, Magic Bookmark does the same job from a photo of your page or the page number, on iPhone.
Are book recap apps free?
Kindle's recap features are free with a Kindle ebook. Magic Bookmark gives you the first book free, then costs $1.40 to $4.99 per book depending on the pack, with credits that never expire.
Can I use a recap app on Android?
Not well today. Kindle's Recaps and Story So Far run on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app, and Amazon says Ask this Book will reach Android later. Magic Bookmark is iPhone only, with Android on its roadmap.
Is a book recap the same as a book summary?
No. A summary condenses a book you have not read, usually nonfiction, ending included. A recap refreshes a book you are reading, usually fiction, and stops at your place.
