About Best Book Apps

Short answer

Best Book Apps is an independent, reader-funded publication that scores reading, ebook, and audiobook apps against one published rubric. Our bias is stated up front: we favour apps that let you leave with your library, and we price everything by the book you actually finish.

Why this site exists

Reading apps are sold like magic and priced like utilities. Almost every roundup online ranks them by which company has an affiliate program, and almost none will tell you what happens to your library when you stop paying. That gap is the whole reason for this publication.

We treat book apps the way a consumer magazine treats appliances: one rubric, published weights, dated prices, and a plain answer to the question that matters most, which is what you own when the relationship ends.

What we do differently

Every review carries a lock-in table, because the cost of leaving is a real cost. Every subscription carries true-cost math against how many books you actually finish, not how many the catalog contains. Every score carries a confidence flag, so you know whether a number came from a month of use or an afternoon of documentation.

We also cover free options first. A library card usually beats the thing we could earn a commission on, and it would be dishonest to bury that.

Corrections and contact

If a price moved, a tier changed name, or a term in a lock-in table is wrong, tell us: corrections@bestbookapps.com. Fixes ship with a date in the page changelog. We would rather be visibly corrected than quietly wrong.

Some links earn us a commission. Commissions never move a rank, and every score is set before anyone checks whether a program exists.
