Is Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited) worth it?

Kindle+ (renamed from Kindle Unlimited on 22 October 2026) is worth its $11.99 a month if you finish three or more books a month from its catalog, mostly genre fiction and series. It is not worth it if you want new bestsellers, read one book a month, or have a library card you are not using. Do the 10-book test below before you pay: if fewer than seven of your next ten books carry the Kindle+ badge, skip it.

What do you get for $11.99 a month?

Kindle+ is Amazon's borrowing subscription, called Kindle Unlimited until 22 October 2026. In the US it costs $11.99 a month plus tax. You can borrow up to 20 titles at a time (ebooks, audiobooks, comics and magazines all count toward the 20) and keep them as long as you stay subscribed, with no due dates. Amazon says thousands of its ebooks include a companion audiobook you can switch to at no extra cost.

You read on any Kindle e-reader or in the free Kindle app on iPhone, Android, computers and the web. You do not need a Kindle device. Kindle+ is not part of Prime; Prime members get one free book a month through First Reads and a smaller curated selection.

What is the 10-book test?

Write down the next ten books you actually intend to read, not the ones you feel you should. Search each one on Amazon and look for the Kindle+ badge (or the "Read for Free" button for members). Count the hits.

Seven or more: Kindle+ will probably pay for itself. Four to six: try the free trial if you are eligible and set a calendar reminder for the day before it renews. Three or fewer: the catalog does not fit you, and no amount of browsing will fix that. Your library card in Libby or Hoopla is the better first stop.

The test works because Kindle+ has a shape. It is deep in self-published and small-press genre fiction, especially romance, thrillers, fantasy and long series, and thinner on the new hardcover bestsellers most people see in bookshops.

What does a book cost on Kindle+?

Divide $11.99 by the number of Kindle+ books you finish in a month. One book: $11.99, which is close to buying it. Two: $6.00 each. Four: $3.00 each. Eight: about $1.50 each. Our Kindle+ review prints the same table against the buy price of the same books.

The number that matters is books you finish, not books you borrow. Twenty borrowed titles you never open cost you $11.99 just the same. If you track your reading, look at last quarter's finished list rather than your intentions.

Who should skip Kindle+?

Readers who mostly want new releases from big publishers, because those titles are rarely in the catalog. Readers who finish one book a month or fewer, because the per-book cost is no better than buying. Readers who already have a library card and have not tried Libby, because Libby is free and carries the big-publisher frontlist the subscription lacks, with a wait.

Anyone who wants to own what they read. Everything borrowed through Kindle+ leaves your library when you cancel, and Amazon does not refund the month you are in. If ownership matters, buy the books, or read DRM-free where you can; our ebook formats guide explains what that means.

Is there a cheaper way to read the same books?

Often. Many long series that live in Kindle+ start with a free or 99-cent first book, and your library may carry the bestsellers that Kindle+ lacks. Kobo Plus is the closest rival subscription if you read on a Kobo, and our Kindle+ vs Kobo Plus head-to-head compares catalogs and price.

If you read fast across both ebooks and audiobooks and are not tied to Kindle, Everand's buffet is another option, with its own availability limits for heavy users. Our cost-per-book calculator lets you compare all of them at your own reading rate.

How do you avoid paying for a month you do not use?

Set a reminder two days before each renewal for the first three months and ask one question: did I finish at least two Kindle+ books this month? Two misses in a row is your answer. Cancelling takes a minute from Manage your Kindle+ Subscription on Amazon; access runs until the next billing date. Our cancellation guide covers the steps for every major book subscription.

Questions readers actually ask

Is Kindle Unlimited still available?
Yes, under a new name. Amazon renamed it Kindle+ on 22 October 2026; the price and rules carried over.
Is Kindle+ worth it for one book a month?
Rarely. At one book a month you pay $11.99 for that book, which is close to its buy price, and you do not keep it.
Does Kindle+ have new bestsellers?
Some, but the catalog leans toward self-published and small-press genre fiction and long series. Search your next ten books before paying.
Do you keep Kindle+ books after cancelling?
No. Borrowed titles leave your library at the end of the billing period. Notes and highlights stay in your Amazon account.
