How do you cancel a book subscription without losing anything?

Before you cancel, spend or note anything that dies with the subscription: Audible Premium credits expire when you cancel, Audible Standard picks lock, Kindle+ borrows leave your library, and Spotify top-up hours become unusable until you resubscribe. Then cancel where you signed up: on the service's website if you paid there, or in the Apple App Store or Google Play if you subscribed inside an app.

What should you do before cancelling anything?

Three checks. First, where did you subscribe? If you paid through an iPhone app, the subscription lives in your Apple account settings; if through an Android app, in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions. Cancelling on the website will not stop an app-store billing. Second, what expires? Third, what can you export? Notes, highlights and reading history are often exportable, and the books often are not.

Our what-you-keep table lists, for every subscription we score, exactly what survives cancellation.

How do you cancel Kindle+ (Kindle Unlimited)?

On Amazon, go to Manage your Kindle+ Subscription and select Cancel Kindle+ Subscription. Your access continues until the next billing date, then all Kindle+ titles leave your library. Amazon does not refund fees already paid. If you subscribed through Google Play in the Kindle Android app, cancel in the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions instead.

Before you go: finish or note your place in anything you are reading, and export highlights if you need them. Notes and highlights stay in your Amazon account either way.

How do you cancel Audible?

Spend your credits first. Audible's plan page says Premium credits expire 12 months after they are issued or when membership is cancelled, so unspent credits are lost the moment you cancel. Books you bought with credits or cash stay yours.

If you are on Standard, know that your monthly picks lock when you leave and become playable again only if you rejoin. Cancel from your account details on the Audible website, or in your app store if you subscribed in the app. If Audible offers a pause or a discount while you cancel, take it only if you will actually use the next credit.

How do you cancel Spotify audiobook hours?

Included Premium hours are part of your Premium plan, so they end when Premium ends. The Audiobooks+ add-on is a separate recurring subscription you can cancel on its own without cancelling Premium. One-time top-up hours last 12 months from purchase, but if you cancel your subscription you lose access to them unless you resubscribe; they keep their original expiry date. Audiobooks you bought outright remain playable.

How do you cancel Everand, Kobo Plus and the rest?

Everand and Kobo Plus: cancel in your account settings on their websites, or in your app store if you subscribed in an app. Both are rentals: nothing you read or listened to stays when the subscription ends. Kobo store purchases are separate and stay in your Kobo library.

Blinkist and Shortform: cancel in account settings; export highlights first where the plan allows it. StoryGraph Plus and Hardcover supporter tiers: the free tier keeps working, so cancelling costs you only the extras; export your reading history anyway as a habit.

How do you make sure you are not charged again?

Look for the confirmation email and keep it. Check your bank or card statement after the next billing date. If you subscribed through Apple or Google, the subscription should disappear from that store's active list. If a charge still appears, contact the service with the confirmation email; most refund a mistaken renewal when you can show you cancelled.
