How many audiobook hours do you get with Spotify Premium?
In the US, Spotify Premium Individual includes 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from Spotify's subscriber catalog. On Family and Duo plans only the plan manager gets the hours, and Premium Student includes none. Hours are counted at normal speed even if you listen faster, unused hours expire monthly, and you can add more with the Audiobooks+ add-on or one-off top-ups.
How many hours, on which plan?
Spotify's US audiobooks page lists 15 hours a month for Premium, and Spotify's help center lists the plans that include hours: Premium Individual, and the plan manager only on Premium Family and Premium Duo. Premium Student does not include audiobook hours. The separate Audiobooks Access plan, US only, costs $9.99 a month and gives 15 hours plus ad-supported music and podcasts.
Hours vary by country. In the markets Spotify announced on 7 October 2026, eligible Premium plans include 12 hours a month.
How are hours counted?
At normal speed. Spotify's own example: a 5-hour audiobook played at 2x takes 2.5 hours of your time but uses 5 hours of your allowance. Re-listening to a book, or part of one, uses hours again. Audiobooks you bought outright do not use hours.
So speed listening does not stretch the allowance. Fifteen hours is fifteen hours of narration.
How many books is 15 hours?
Check the length on the book page before you start: many novels run roughly 8 to 14 hours, and long fantasy can run past 30. In practice 15 hours covers about one typical novel a month, or half of a long one. That is why our Spotify Audiobooks review calls it excellent for light listeners and a trap for anyone in the middle of a 30-hour epic.
If you run out mid-chapter, your place is saved and the app offers ways to get more hours.
Do unused hours roll over?
No. At the start of each billing period Spotify renews your included hours and any unused hours from the previous month are gone. Spotify does not refund unused or expired listening time. Top-up hours you buy separately are different: they last 12 months from purchase, but you lose access to them if you cancel your subscription, until you resubscribe.
Is 15 hours enough for you?
Look at your last three months. If you finished one audiobook a month or fewer, 15 hours probably covers you and the included hours are a genuine bonus on a subscription you already pay for. If you finished two or more, or you like long fantasy and series, you will run out most months and need either Audiobooks+ or another source.
A simple habit helps: check the book's length before you start it. A 9-hour novel fits comfortably; a 28-hour one will take two months of included hours, and you may lose the thread in between. If you do pause a long book across months, a recap tool or a short cast list saves the first twenty minutes of confusion when you return.
When does Audiobooks+ make sense?
Audiobooks+ is a recurring add-on that adds more hours each month on top of your plan; added hours are used after your included hours. It makes sense if you already pay for Premium and regularly run out before the month ends. If you need far more than 15 hours a month, compare it with a buffet like Everand, with Kindle+ narration if you read on Kindle, and with your library. Our cost-per-book calculator puts them side by side.
One more Spotify feature worth knowing: Page Match lets you scan a print book's ISBN barcode and jump to the matching page in the audiobook, which helps if you switch between formats.
