What should you do before reading the next book in a series?
Work through four steps in order: reread the last two or three chapters of the previous book, rebuild your cast list, check which recap tool covers your format, and avoid wikis until you are done. The checklist below takes about an hour per previous book. Kindle Recaps covers Kindle series in the US for free; Magic Bookmark covers supported titles in any format on iPhone.
How should you use this checklist?
Start a week before the release date, not the night before. Tick each line as you go. If the gap since the last book is short, skip straight to the final chapters and the cast list. If it has been years, give each earlier book its own pass through the first section.
The checklist is format-neutral. Where a step depends on how you read, the line says so.
Which recap tool fits your copy?
If the series is on your Kindle and you are in the US, use Kindle Recaps for earlier books and Story So Far for the current one. If you own the series in print, borrowed it from the library, or listen on audio, Magic Bookmark recaps supported titles up to the page or phrase you give it, on iPhone. If neither covers your series, the reread and the cast list are enough.
A week before
- Find your copy of the previous book (print, ebook or audio)
- Check whether your format is covered by Kindle Recaps or Magic Bookmark
- Mute the series name on social media until you have read the new book
Reread
- Reread the last two or three chapters of the previous book
- Skim the first chapter of each earlier book for the setup
- Note any promise, prophecy, debt or unanswered question
Rebuild the cast
- List central characters still in play, minor ones, and who is gone
- Write one line on what each central character wants
- Check the list against the final chapters you reread
Fill the gaps safely
- Use a recap that stops at a place you choose, not a whole-series summary
- If you ask a chatbot, name the book and chapter and tell it to stop there
- Do not open fan wikis or character pages until you finish the new book
Day one
- Keep the cast list in the new book as your bookmark
- Add new characters as they appear
Questions readers actually ask
- How long does it take to catch up on a series?
- About an hour per previous book: twenty to thirty minutes rereading the ending, ten to fifteen on a cast list, and the rest on any recap you need.
- Is it safe to read a series recap online?
- Only if it stops at the book you finished. Many recaps and wikis cover later books too. Tools that stop at a place you choose are safer.
- Which recap app works for print series?
- Magic Bookmark works with print, ebook, library and audiobook copies of supported titles on iPhone. Kindle's recap features work inside Kindle ebooks.
