Audible review: the biggest catalog, the smallest exit
Credits, exclusives, and an included listening tier, wrapped in the least portable audio library you can buy.
Verdict in brief
The deepest catalog and the exclusives, priced fairly at one book a month and badly at four, with ownership terms that keep your library inside Audible.

What is Audible, actually?
A monthly membership that grants a credit, redeemable for almost any audiobook regardless of its list price, plus access to an included catalog that rotates. Extra books can be bought at member prices.
The credit is the product. Redeem it on an expensive book and the membership looks cheap; redeem it on a $12 title and you have overpaid for convenience.
How good is the catalog?
The deepest in the business, with exclusives that exist nowhere else. If a book has an audio edition, Audible almost certainly has it, often first.
The included tier is genuinely useful for background listening but is not where the new releases live. Treat it as a bonus, not the reason to subscribe.
What do you actually own?
Titles bought with credits stay in your library after you cancel, which is better than any rental service. They also stay in Audible's format, with DRM and no export path, which is worse than Libro.fm's terms at an equivalent price.
That single row of the lock-in table is why our best paid audiobook pick is not Audible.
The money
$14.95 a month for one credit, desk-checked and unverified against a live checkout. The cost math block below restates that as cost per book at one, two, and four books a month, next to buying the same books outright.
The classic waste is credit accumulation. If you have three unspent credits, the membership has been charging you for books you did not want.
Scores, criterion by criterion
Experience 16/20 (excellent player, store noise inside the app). Catalog fit 14/15. Ownership 6/15 (DRM, no export). Sync 9/10. Discovery 7/10. Price honesty 6/10 (credits obscure the real per-book cost). Accessibility 8/10. Staying power 9/10.
Who should install, sample, or pass
Sample first is the honest verdict. Subscribe if you finish about one audiobook a month and want exclusives. Use the trial, then decide, and compare against Libro.fm on the same book before you commit.
Lock-in
What you own, and what you lose
| Formats | Audible's own audio formats only |
|---|---|
| DRM | Yes on most titles |
| Export path | None for purchased titles |
| Offline access | Yes, inside the Audible app |
| If you cancel | Credit-purchased titles remain in your library; the included Plus catalog goes away |
| If it folds | Honest speculation: Amazon-scale services rarely vanish, but a format with no export path is a bet on one company's goodwill. |
Cost math
The true monthly cost
Audible at $14.95/mo, priced per book you actually finish.
| Books a month | Cost per book | Buying à la carte |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $14.95 | $22.00 |
| 2 | $7.48 (credit + 1 purchase) | $44.00 |
| 4 | $11.24 (credit + 3 purchases) | $88.00 |
Credits cover one book; extra books are member-priced purchases, which is where the per-book cost climbs back up.

Q & A
Questions readers actually ask
- Do I keep my Audible books if I cancel?
- Yes for titles bought with credits or cash; they stay in your library. No for included-catalog titles, which disappear with the membership.
- Is Audible worth it at one book a month?
- Roughly, yes. A credit costs about the same as a mid-priced audiobook and less than a premium one. At two or more books a month, deals or a buffet subscription beat it.
- Can I move Audible books to another app?
- No. Purchases are DRM-protected in Audible's own format with no supported export path, which is the main argument for buying DRM-free elsewhere.
