Best Book Apps

What do you keep when you cancel a book subscription?

Usually less than you think. Buffet subscriptions (Kindle+, Everand, Kobo Plus, Spotify hours) leave you with nothing but your notes. Audible Premium keeps the books you bought with credits but loses unspent credits; Audible Standard locks your monthly picks. Libro.fm's DRM-free files are yours forever. Library apps never gave you anything to keep. The table below lists every app we score.

Why does this question decide so much?

The monthly price is the number everyone compares, and it is the least important one over five years. A $12 subscription you cancel after three years leaves you with an empty shelf; a $15 credit plan you cancel after three years leaves you with 36 books. Neither is wrong, but you should choose knowingly.

Our rubric gives ownership 15 of 100 points for this reason, and every review prints a lock-in table with an "If you cancel" row. This page collects those rows in one place, with 2026's changes added.

What changed in 2026?

Audible added Standard ($8.99), the first Audible plan whose monthly book does not stay with you after you leave. Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ without changing what happens on cancellation: access runs to the next billing date, then the shelf empties, with no refund. Spotify's help center spells out that top-up hours become inaccessible while you are unsubscribed.

How do the models compare over three years?

Take a reader who finishes one book a month and cancels after three years. On a $11.99 buffet they paid about $432 and keep nothing but notes. On Audible Premium at $14.95 they paid about $538 and keep 36 audiobooks inside Audible. On Libro.fm at $14.99 a month they paid about $540 and keep 36 DRM-free files they can play anywhere. On the library they paid nothing and kept nothing, which was always the deal.

None of these is the wrong choice. A buffet is fine if you read widely and never reread. A credit plan is fine if you relisten or want a shelf. The point of this page is that the choice should be deliberate, and the monthly price alone does not show it.

What about apps that never held your books?

Trackers, recap tools and summary services hold something else: your history, your notes, your place. StoryGraph, Goodreads and Hardcover all export your reading history. Blinkist and Shortform let you export highlights on some plans. Magic Bookmark works alongside a copy you already own, so there is nothing to cancel that could take your book away; it has no subscription, and its credits never expire. Read each review's export row before you rely on any of them for years of notes.

What should you export before cancelling?

Highlights and notes from Kindle, Blinkist or Shortform where the plan allows it. Your reading history from Goodreads or StoryGraph as a CSV, even if you are not leaving, because it is the one file that represents years of your reading. Libro.fm files, downloaded to a drive you control. And spend any Audible Premium credits first.
