Audible's $8.99 Standard plan: what do you actually get?
Cheaper than Premium by $5.96 a month, and the difference is ownership. A plain reading of the plan page before you switch.
27 oct 2026: Audible's Standard plan, launched in the US on 3 March 2026, costs $8.99 a month. You pick one audiobook a month from the full catalog and can listen to your picks only while you remain a member; picks do not roll over. Premium, at $14.95, gives a monthly credit for a book you keep even after you cancel, plus the included catalog. If you want to own your audiobooks, Standard is the wrong plan.
What is Audible Standard?
Standard is the cheaper of Audible's two US memberships. Audible's newsroom post announcing it, reported by TechCrunch on 3 March 2026, prices it at $8.99 a month and describes one audiobook a month from the full catalog plus unlimited listening to a curated set that includes Audible Originals and nearly 200 titles previously on Wondery+.
Audible's plan page is blunter about the catch: "Listen while subscribed" and "Listen to your audiobook picks as long as you're a member." The FAQ confirms that if you cancel, you lose access to any audiobook selections you made as a Standard member. They show a lock icon and come back only if you rejoin.
How is Standard different from Premium?
Premium costs $14.95 a month. Instead of a selection, you get a credit. A book bought with a credit is yours to keep even if you cancel. Premium also includes access to the included catalog of 150,000+ audiobooks and podcasts and member-only sales. Credits roll over month to month, but they expire 12 months after they are issued or when you cancel.
So the $5.96 a month you save on Standard is the price of ownership. Over a year that is $71.52 saved and twelve books you no longer hold when you leave. If you mostly listen once and move on, that can be a fair trade. If you relisten, or might cancel in a year, it is not.
Which plan makes sense for which listener?
One book a month, listen once, plan to stay: Standard is the cheapest way into Audible's full catalog, and the selection model means nothing piles up unspent because selections do not roll over (you simply lose a month you skip).
Want to keep what you buy: Premium monthly, or Premium annual if you are sure you will use 12 or 24 credits ($149.50 or $229.50 a year). Want to own DRM-free files you can play anywhere: Libro.fm, which costs about the same as Premium per credit. Want the cheapest legal route: your library card in Libby or Hoopla, at $0.
Does this change our Audible score?
Our Audible review scored the credit membership 75 out of 100 on 1 August 2026, with ownership as its weakest criterion. Standard does not change that score, because Premium still exists on the same terms. We have updated our price tracker to list Standard and to retire the old "Plus, listen only" row, which no longer appears on Audible's US plan page.
What should current Premium members do?
Nothing forces a move. Before you downgrade, spend or note every credit: Premium credits expire 12 months after issue or when you cancel, and the books you bought with them stay yours either way.
Then ask what you actually do with the plan. If you finish one book a month and rarely relisten, Standard costs less, but you keep nothing when you leave. If you relisten, share books within a household, or might leave Audible within a year, owned books are worth the extra $5.96. If you mostly play titles from Premium's included catalog, check that the ones you use are still available to you on Standard before switching.
