Is it cheaper to subscribe outside the iPhone app?

Often, yes. Our Reading app price index, Q4 2026 compared nine plans sold both on the web and inside iPhone apps: four cost more in the app, two cost slightly less and three cost the same. Audible Premium is $14.95 on the web and $15.99 in the app, and Audible Standard $8.99 against $9.99. Fable Plus is $5.99 a month either way. Check the in-app purchase list on an app's App Store page before you subscribe, then decide where to pay.

A five-app iPhone setup

Libby for free library books, one store for books you keep (Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books or Google Play Books), Libro.fm or Audible for audiobooks, The StoryGraph to track what you finish, and a recap tool if you often come back to books after a break. That covers reading, listening, tracking and picking up where you left off.

Which iOS version do these apps need?

Check the compatibility line on each App Store listing before you install. Magic Bookmark requires iOS 16.4 or later. Google Play Books' listing requires iOS 26 or later on iPhone and iPad.

What we did not score, and why

Why is Audible not on this list?

It works well on iPhone, but at 75 it trails Libro.fm for most listeners and its iPhone in-app price for Premium is $15.99 against $14.95 on the web (our Q4 2026 price index). Subscribe on the web if you choose it.

What about buying inside iPhone apps?

Several book apps charge more for the same plan when you pay through the App Store. In our Q4 2026 price index, 4 of 9 web and in-app pairs cost more in the iPhone app. Check both before you subscribe.

Is there a free recap app for iPhone?

Kindle Story So Far and Google Play Books Catch me up are free inside their own eligible ebooks. Magic Bookmark gives you the first book free, then charges per book.

How we chose

Every app here runs on a current iPhone and is scored on the same eight criteria as the rest of the site. The list is ordered by total score; the use cases above say which job each one is for. Prices are from our Q4 2026 price index, checked 2026-11-04. Magic Bookmark and Google Play Books are desk reviews from their listings and help pages.
