How much does an audiobook cost per hour of listening?
It depends far more on the book's length and the route than on the store. On a credit plan (Audible Premium at $14.95, Libro.fm at $14.99) a 20-hour book costs about $0.75 an hour and an 8-hour book about $1.87. Spotify Premium's included hours work out near $0.80 an hour if you use all of them on audiobooks. A Chirp deal can fall under $0.30 an hour, and a library loan costs nothing. Long books favor credits; short books favor deals and buffets.
Why measure audiobooks per hour at all?
Because audiobook pricing hides length. A credit buys one book whether it runs six hours or forty. A buffet charges by the month whatever you listen to. Spotify meters hours, not books. Looking at cost per listening hour puts all three on one scale and shows you which route fits the books you actually choose.
It is not the only measure that matters. Whether you keep the book, and whether you will really finish it, change the answer more than a few cents an hour. But per-hour math is where most people discover they have been spending a premium credit on a short book.
How did we work the numbers?
We took three example lengths, 8, 12 and 20 hours, which cover most single novels and nonfiction titles, and divided each route's cost of one book by the hours. Prices are US list prices we checked between 27 October and 3 November 2026: Audible Premium $14.95 a month for one credit, Libro.fm $14.99 for one credit, Everand $11.99 a month, Kobo Plus Listen $7.99 a month, Spotify Premium $11.99 with about 15 hours of audiobook listening a month, and a Chirp deal at $4.99 as an example. These are worked examples, not averages of any catalog.
For buffets we assume one finished book a month, the case where a buffet looks worst. Finish three and divide the buffet figures by three.
What does the table tell you?
Long books are where credits shine. A 20-hour fantasy novel on a $14.99 credit costs $0.75 an hour, which is better than a buffet at one book a month. Short books are where credits waste money: an 8-hour book on the same credit costs $1.87 an hour, and the same title on a Chirp deal or from the library costs a fraction of that.
Spotify's included hours are excellent value for one short or medium book a month, because you are already paying for the music. They stop being value the moment a long book pushes you past the monthly cap.
Buffets fall fast with volume. Everand at one 12-hour book a month is $1.00 an hour; at three books it is about $0.33. That is why buffets suit heavy listeners and punish occasional ones.
How do you use this when choosing a book?
Spend credits on long books you want to keep. Buy short books on deals, or borrow them. Use the library for anything with a short holds queue. If you are on Spotify, put shorter books there and save credits for the epics. A simple habit: look at the runtime before you spend a credit, and if it is under ten hours, check Chirp and Libby first.
Speed changes the per-hour figure without changing the per-book one. Listening at 1.5x turns a 12-hour book into 8 hours of your time, which matters on Spotify's metered hours and not at all on a credit. Our speed listening guide covers how fast is too fast.
Does per-hour cost ignore what you keep?
Yes, and that matters. A Libro.fm credit and an Audible credit cost almost the same per hour, but the Libro.fm file is DRM-free and yours to play anywhere, while the Audible title plays in Audible's apps. Buffet and Spotify hours leave nothing behind when you stop paying. The last column of the table says which is which; our what-you-keep resource goes through every service.

Questions readers actually ask
- What is the cheapest way to listen to audiobooks per hour?
- The library, at $0. After that, a discounted purchase on Chirp is usually cheapest per hour for a book you keep, and a buffet subscription is cheapest per hour if you finish several books a month.
- Is an Audible credit better value on long books?
- Yes. A credit buys one book regardless of length, so a 20-hour book costs about $0.75 an hour on a $14.95 credit and an 8-hour book about $1.87. Spend credits on long books you want to keep.
- How many audiobook hours do you get with Spotify Premium?
- About 15 hours of audiobook listening a month in the US, included in the $11.99 plan. Our Spotify audiobook hours guide covers how the cap works and what counts toward it.
- Does listening faster save money?
- Only on metered plans such as Spotify's hours. On a credit or a buffet you pay the same per book whatever speed you listen at.
