How to read more books, without pretending to be someone else

Short answer

Read more by lowering friction and switching formats, not by trying harder. Put the book on the device already in your hand, keep an audiobook running for hands-busy time, and read a fixed ten minutes at a fixed moment. Twenty minutes a day at average pace finishes about eighteen books a year. Track sessions only if numbers motivate you.

What actually increases reading time?

Format switching. Most people have far more listening time than sitting time, so pairing an ebook with its audiobook and moving between them converts commutes, dishes, and walks into pages.

Second: friction. If opening your book takes four taps and passes a store page, you will open something else instead. That is why this site measures Tap to Page at all.

How many pages a day is realistic?

Average adult reading runs 200-250 words a minute, so ten minutes is roughly 20-25 pages a week per daily session. Twenty minutes a day, held for a year, is about eighteen average books.

That number is the whole argument against reading sprints: consistency beats intensity by an enormous margin.

Should you track your reading?

Only if it helps. Session timers like Bookly turn reading into a visible habit for some people and into homework for others. StoryGraph's stats without a challenge counter is the gentler middle.

The test: if a broken streak makes you avoid the app, delete the app, not the habit.

What about books you are not enjoying?

Abandon them at fifty pages. Every unfinished book you carry around is a tax on the next one, and DNF tracking in StoryGraph makes the decision feel like data rather than failure.

Q & A

Questions readers actually ask

How long does it take to read a book?
An average 90,000-word book takes about six hours at 250 words a minute, or roughly twenty minutes a day for three weeks.
Do audiobooks count as reading?
For comprehension of narrative and most nonfiction, research finds them broadly comparable. Dense technical material is the exception, where text wins.
