Does Spotify have audiobook recaps, and what do they skip?

Yes. Spotify Recaps are short audio summaries of the part of an audiobook you have already heard, so you can pick a story back up without rewinding. They launched as an iOS beta on 13 November 2025, reached Android in April 2026, and cover a selection of English-language audiobooks. They only work on audiobooks you are listening to in Spotify.

How do Spotify Recaps work?

Open an audiobook you have already started and tap the Recap button at the top of its page. Spotify says your first Recap becomes available after the first 15 to 20 minutes of listening, and after that Recaps update to match your progress. Spotify describes them as covering only the portion you have heard, like a "previously on" for TV, and says they help you rejoin a story without spoilers or full book summaries.

Recaps use AI. Spotify says it does not use audiobook content for LLM training or voice generation, and that Recaps do not replicate the narration or replace the audiobook.

Which books and devices get Recaps?

Spotify's support page for authors says Recaps are available for select English-language audiobooks in the Spotify app. They started on iOS, and Spotify's 15 April 2026 update says they are now on Android too.

Publishers decide for their titles. Audiobooks published through Spotify for Authors became eligible on 13 December 2025, and authors can opt out, with changes taking up to 72 hours. So two books in the same series can behave differently: one has a Recap button, the other does not.

What does it cost?

Spotify does not sell Recaps separately. You need access to the audiobook in Spotify, which in the US usually means the 15 monthly listening hours in Premium Individual ($12.99 a month), the Audiobooks Access plan ($9.99 a month for 15 hours), or buying the title. A Recap plays as audio; we have not seen Spotify say whether listening to one counts against your hours, so we make no claim either way.

What do Spotify Recaps not do?

They only see what you played in Spotify. An audiobook from Audible, Libby or Libro.fm, a paperback, or a Kindle ebook is invisible to them. They are spoken summaries, not a cast list or a question box: Spotify's announcement describes neither. And because they are AI summaries of a limited selection of titles, a book you love may simply not have one.

What are the alternatives if your book is not on Spotify?

Kindle Story So Far recaps eligible Kindle ebooks up to where you stopped, inside the Kindle app and on Kindle devices in the US. Google Play Books' Catch me up does the same for eligible Play Books ebooks on Android, iOS and the web. For an audiobook from any store, or a print copy, Magic Bookmark works from the last phrase you heard or a photo of your page, on iPhone, for its supported titles, at $1.40 to $4.99 a book after a free first credit. Our recap app picks compare all four.

How to use a Recap without ruining the ending

Play the Recap before you resume, not after a chapter you half heard. If the Recap mentions a name you do not recognise, rewind a few minutes instead of searching the web, where the next result is often a full plot summary. And if you are switching between the print book and the audiobook, keep track of your place in one app, because a Recap only knows the audio position.
