Libby review: the best book app costs nothing
A library card, an app that is genuinely pleasant, and the only ownership terms on this site that cannot disappoint you.
Verdict in brief
Free audiobooks and ebooks with a library card, in an app that is genuinely pleasant, and the friendliest ownership terms possible because you were only ever borrowing.

What is Libby, actually?
Libby is the borrowing app for public library ebook and audiobook collections. You add a library card, browse what your system licenses, and borrow up to your library's limit. Loans expire on their own, which means no late fees and no decisions.
The catalog is not one catalog. It is your library's catalog, so two readers in different towns get different answers to the same search. That variability is the single biggest thing reviews of Libby get wrong.
How bad are the holds?
Bad on anything popular and irrelevant on everything else. Frontlist bestsellers routinely carry multi-week or multi-month queues, while backlist, midlist, and nonfiction are usually available the moment you look.
The fix is structural, not clever: keep six to ten holds running permanently so something always arrives, and use a second library card where you are eligible. Our free audiobooks guide covers which cards are open to non-residents.
Is the reading and listening experience good?
Yes. The audiobook player handles speed, sleep timers, and bookmarking cleanly, and the ebook reader is competent rather than beautiful. Kindle-format loans hand off to the Kindle app in the US, which is convenient and quietly extends Amazon's gravity.
Accessibility is solid: text scaling works, screen reader labelling is mostly sensible, and the app does not fight system settings.
Scores, criterion by criterion
Experience 15/20 (clean, unflashy, occasionally slow to open). Catalog fit 12/15 (your library decides). Ownership 15/15 (nothing to lose, and the app never pretends otherwise). Sync 8/10. Discovery 7/10. Price honesty 10/10 (free is free, with no upsell anywhere). Accessibility 8/10. Staying power 9/10 (the vendor is embedded in library infrastructure).
Who should install, sample, or pass
Install if you have a library card, which is nearly everyone reading this. Sample first only if your local system's collection is unusually thin, and check before you judge the app for it. There is no case for passing: it costs nothing and reduces every other book bill you pay.
Lock-in
What you own, and what you lose
| Formats | EPUB and Kindle-format loans, library audiobook streams |
|---|---|
| DRM | Yes, on every loan; expiry is the mechanism |
| Export path | None needed; notes are yours to copy out manually |
| Offline access | Full downloads for the loan period |
| If you cancel | Nothing to lose, because nothing was owned |
| If it folds | Honest speculation: the catalog belongs to your library, not the app, so another reader app would inherit it. |

Q & A
Questions readers actually ask
- Is Libby completely free?
- Yes. Libby charges nothing and shows no ads. Your library pays for the licences out of its collections budget, which is also why catalogs and loan limits differ between systems.
- Can I use more than one library card in Libby?
- Yes, and you should. Libby supports multiple cards in one account and searches them together, which is the single most effective way to shorten holds.
- Do Libby audiobooks work offline?
- Yes. Download a title inside the app and it plays offline until the loan expires, at which point it returns itself.
