Libro.fm review: the same price, without the walls

Credit membership at Audible money, files with no DRM, and a share to an independent bookstore you choose.

Verdict in brief

The same credit price as Audible for DRM-free files you keep in a portable format, with a share going to a bookstore you pick.

What is Libro.fm, actually?

A credit-based audiobook store that splits revenue with an independent bookstore you nominate. You buy a credit each month, spend it on nearly anything in the catalog, and download DRM-free MP3 or M4B files.

The apps are pleasant and unremarkable, which is the correct ambition for an app whose main feature is that you can leave it.

What does DRM-free actually get you?

Files that play in any audiobook player, back up to your own storage, and survive the company. Nothing else on this site's paid audio shelf can say that.

It also means a slightly clunkier path if you want the files off your phone: you download them from the web account rather than the app.

Where it loses to Audible

Exclusives. Titles produced by Audible do not appear here, and that gap is permanent. There is also no equivalent of the included listening tier, so a month with no credit spent is a month with nothing new.

Scores, criterion by criterion

Experience 15/20. Catalog fit 12/15 (everything except exclusives). Ownership 15/15 (DRM-free, portable, permanent). Sync 8/10. Discovery 6/10. Price honesty 9/10. Accessibility 7/10. Staying power 8/10.

Who should install, sample, or pass

Install. If you buy audiobooks at all, this is the default recommendation, and the only reason to choose Audible instead is a specific exclusive you want.

How these weights work

Q & A

Questions readers actually ask

Are Libro.fm audiobooks really DRM-free?
Yes. Purchases download as unprotected MP3 or M4B files you can back up and play in any player, which is the strongest ownership position in paid audio.
Does Libro.fm cost more than Audible?
Slightly, at desk-checked prices: about $16.99 per credit against $14.95. You are paying roughly two dollars for portability and a bookstore's cut.
