Family sharing for ebooks and audiobooks
Short answer
Apple Books shares purchases cleanly with a family group. Amazon shares through Household, which links two adult accounts and works for many but not all titles. Kobo does not share purchases. Library apps sidestep the whole problem: every family member gets their own free card and their own borrows.

How does Amazon Household work?
Two adult accounts can link and share eligible ebooks and audiobooks, with child profiles managed separately. Eligibility is publisher-dependent, so some titles simply refuse to appear on the other account.
How does Apple family sharing work?
Purchases from Apple Books share with up to five other family members automatically, with per-purchase hiding available. It is the smoothest implementation in books and one of the strongest reasons Apple households stay Apple households.
What is the free alternative?
Separate library cards. Every family member with their own Libby account can borrow independently, and household borrows do not compete for the same copy. It costs nothing and needs no eligibility check.
| Platform | Shares purchases | Members | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Books | Yes | Up to 6 | Apple devices only |
| Amazon Household | Partly | 2 adults + children | Publisher-dependent eligibility |
| Kobo | No | n/a | One account, one library |
| Libby / Hoopla | n/a | Everyone with a card | Each person needs a card |
Q & A
Questions readers actually ask
- Can two people share one Kindle library?
- Partly, through Amazon Household, which links two adult accounts. Not every title is eligible for sharing, and the setting is per-purchase.
- Can families share audiobooks?
- Apple shares Apple Books audiobooks with a family group; Audible titles share only through Household eligibility. Library audiobooks need no sharing at all.
