Apple Books review: the prettiest room in the house
Beautiful reading, a quiet store, family sharing that works, and a door that only opens inward.
Verdict in brief
The best-looking reading experience on Apple hardware with family sharing that actually works, priced at the cost of never leaving the ecosystem.

What is Apple Books, actually?
Apple's built-in reader and store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It handles purchases, sideloaded EPUBs, PDFs, and audiobooks in one library, and it is preinstalled, which is most of why people use it.
Why it reads better than the competition
Typography, page rendering, and scroll behaviour are the best on Apple hardware, and the store does not push promotions into the reading view. Reading goals are unobtrusive and easy to ignore.
It also handles your own EPUB files gracefully, which quietly makes it a decent DRM-free library on a Mac.
Family sharing and the export reality
Purchases share with a family group cleanly, which is rare and genuinely valuable for households. Purchased books stay Apple-shaped, though: no Android, no web, no export. Sideloaded EPUBs remain yours in full.
Scores, criterion by criterion
Experience 17/20 (the best reader here). Catalog fit 12/15. Ownership 6/15 on purchases, higher in practice if you sideload. Sync 8/10 (excellent within Apple, absent outside). Discovery 6/10. Price honesty 8/10. Accessibility 8/10. Staying power 9/10.
Who should install, sample, or pass
Install if every device in your house has an Apple logo and you expect that to stay true. Pass if you own a single Android device, because half your library will be unreachable on it.
Lock-in
What you own, and what you lose
| Formats | EPUB, including DRM-free files you add yourself, plus PDFs |
|---|---|
| DRM | Yes on store purchases; sideloaded EPUBs stay open |
| Export path | Sideloaded files move freely; purchases do not |
| Offline access | Yes |
| If you cancel | Nothing to cancel; purchases stay in the Apple account |
| If it folds | Honest speculation: your own sideloaded EPUBs survive anything; purchases are Apple-shaped forever. |

Q & A
Questions readers actually ask
- Can I read Apple Books on Android?
- No. Apple Books has no Android or web client, so purchased titles are unreachable outside Apple devices.
- Does Apple Books support family sharing?
- Yes, and it works well. Purchases can be shared with a family group at no extra cost, which is the strongest household argument for the platform.
