Goodreads review: the network, running on fumes

Everyone is here, the data is here, and almost nothing has improved in ten years. That is the whole review.

Verdict in brief

The reading network everyone already uses, with a CSV export that lets you leave, wrapped in an app nobody has loved in a decade.

What is Goodreads, actually?

Amazon's reading social network and catalog: shelves, ratings, reviews, an annual challenge, and the largest book database with the largest crowd attached to it.

What it still does best

Coverage and crowd. Obscure titles, translated editions, and series ordering are catalogued more completely here than anywhere else, and review volume means you can gauge a book in seconds.

The CSV export is complete and reliable, which is both a courtesy and, for many readers, the exit door.

Where the neglect shows

The app is slow, the interface is cluttered with ads and dated patterns, and the annual challenge turns a hobby into a quota for streaky readers. Recommendations have not meaningfully improved in a decade.

Scores, criterion by criterion

Experience 9/20 (the lowest experience score on this site, and it is earned). Catalog fit 13/15. Ownership 8/15 (full CSV export, Amazon-owned data). Sync 8/10. Discovery 6/10. Price honesty 9/10 (free, ad-supported, honest about it). Accessibility 6/10. Staying power 9/10.

Who should install, sample, or pass

Sample first. Keep the account for the catalog and the crowd, do your actual tracking in StoryGraph or Hardcover, and export your library today whichever way you land.

How these weights work

Q & A

Questions readers actually ask

Can I export my Goodreads library?
Yes. The account settings include a full CSV export of shelves, ratings, and dates, and it imports cleanly into StoryGraph and Hardcover.
Is Goodreads owned by Amazon?
Yes, since 2013, which is worth knowing when weighing its recommendations and its links to buy.
