Hardcover review: the open alternative, still growing

A modern tracker with a public API, a real community, and the unfinished edges of a young product.

Verdict in brief

A modern tracker with an open API and a fast trajectory, still young enough that some corners are visibly unfinished.

What is Hardcover, actually?

An independent, community-funded reading tracker with modern apps, a public GraphQL API, and an unusually transparent roadmap. It imports from Goodreads and StoryGraph and ships changes visibly, month over month.

Why the API matters

Because it is the strongest anti-lock-in feature any tracker offers. Your reading data can be pulled into your own spreadsheet, site, or backup on your schedule, without waiting for an export button to exist.

Where it is still young

Catalog gaps on obscure editions, a smaller community than Goodreads, and features that arrive in stages. None of this is disqualifying; all of it is visible in daily use.

Scores, criterion by criterion

Experience 13/20. Catalog fit 10/15. Ownership 12/15 (API plus exports). Sync 7/10. Discovery 8/10. Price honesty 8/10. Accessibility 7/10. Staying power 5/10 (the lowest here, and the honest number for a young independent).

Who should install, sample, or pass

Sample first. Run it beside StoryGraph for a month; if the openness and the trajectory matter more to you than polish, it will win.

How these weights work

Q & A

Questions readers actually ask

Is Hardcover a good Goodreads replacement?
For most features, yes, and the import works. The crowd is much smaller, so if you use Goodreads mainly for reviews from strangers, keep both for now.
Does Hardcover cost money?
The core app is free; supporter tiers from around $5 a month fund development and unlock extras.
