Kobo app review: the ecosystem you can leave
Broad format support, borrowing built in, and a subscription that undercuts the big name. The exit is the feature.
Verdict in brief
Broad format support, library borrowing built in, and a cheaper subscription in an ecosystem you can actually leave later.

What is the Kobo app, actually?
Rakuten's ebook reader and store, available on iOS, Android, and the web. It reads EPUB, PDF, and comic formats natively, accepts sideloaded files without ceremony, and integrates library borrowing through OverDrive in supported regions.
What is Kobo Plus?
A subscription with separate Read, Listen, and combined tiers, starting around $9.99 a month at desk-checked prices. The catalog is smaller than Kindle Unlimited's and skews international and independent, so check your authors before subscribing.
The combined tier is the honest comparison against Everand, not against KU.
Where it loses
Store depth and app polish. Some titles are unavailable in some regions, search is weaker than Amazon's, and the interface is functional rather than lovely. None of that shows up on the lock-in table, which is where Kobo wins the argument.
Scores, criterion by criterion
Experience 15/20. Catalog fit 12/15. Ownership 12/15 (broad formats, sideloading welcome, DRM varies by publisher). Sync 8/10. Discovery 7/10. Price honesty 9/10. Accessibility 7/10. Staying power 8/10.
Who should install, sample, or pass
Install if you are starting a library from scratch, or if the phrase 'no export path' in the Kindle review bothered you. Sample first if your reading is heavily US frontlist, where Amazon's catalog still wins.
Lock-in
What you own, and what you lose
| Formats | EPUB, PDF, CBZ and more; sideloading is welcome |
|---|---|
| DRM | Varies by publisher; plenty of DRM-free titles |
| Export path | Sideloaded and DRM-free files move freely; DRM titles do not |
| Offline access | Yes |
| If you cancel | Kobo Plus titles go away; purchases stay |
| If it folds | Honest speculation: broad format support means your library is closer to portable than any competitor's. |

Q & A
Questions readers actually ask
- Can I sideload my own EPUBs into Kobo?
- Yes. Kobo accepts DRM-free EPUB and other formats directly, which is the main practical reason readers who care about ownership choose it.

- At desk-checked prices the Read tier is cheaper, around $9.99 against $11.99, with a smaller catalog. Check your authors first; price is the easy part.
