Chirp review: audiobooks on sale, no subscription

Limited-time discounts on a rotating catalog, bought outright, with no monthly fee to forget about.

Verdict in brief

Deep discounts on a rotating catalog with no monthly fee, which beats credits for anyone willing to buy on the deal's schedule instead of their own.

What is Chirp, actually?

A deals store for audiobooks, run by the team behind BookBub. Titles go on sale for a limited window at prices that regularly land under five dollars, you buy them outright, and they live in your Chirp library permanently.

There is no membership, no credit, and nothing to cancel. Email alerts do the work of a subscription without the charge.

How good are the deals really?

Genuinely good on backlist and midlist, rare on new releases. Set your genre preferences, keep a wishlist, and expect to wait weeks rather than days for a specific title.

The crossover math is simple: at typical deal prices, two or three Chirp purchases cost less than a single Audible credit.

The ownership catch

Purchases are permanent but app-bound: playback happens in Chirp, with no export. That is better than a rental and worse than Libro.fm, and it is the reason the ownership score sits at 12 rather than 15.

Scores, criterion by criterion

Experience 13/20 (simple player, fewer controls than Audible). Catalog fit 10/15 (the deals are the catalog). Ownership 12/15. Sync 7/10. Discovery 8/10 (the alerts are the feature). Price honesty 9/10. Accessibility 7/10. Staying power 8/10.

Who should install, sample, or pass

Install if you are patient and price-sensitive. It costs nothing to keep installed, and the alerts pay for themselves the first time a book on your list drops to $3.

How these weights work

Q & A

Questions readers actually ask

Do I keep Chirp audiobooks forever?
Yes. Purchases are permanent and there is no subscription, though playback stays inside the Chirp app because the files are not downloadable elsewhere.
Is Chirp cheaper than Audible?
Per book, usually much cheaper. Per book you specifically want right now, often not available at all. It rewards a wishlist, not an urge.
